What's the most dangerous job in the world?
Trawlerman?
Electrical Lineman?
Steel Erector?
Armed Forces?
Footballer (joke)?

For me it has to be Lineman with Trawler-man close behind

Crab fishing in the Bearing Sea always looks pretty shitty. Arctic storms, 30 foot seas, boats covered in ice and on average 3 hours sleep a day over a 3-4 week period.

One of the most terrifying scenarios of any sport must be the realization by a jockey that the half-ton animal underneath him is not going to land successfully as it flies over a six foot fence

I imagine it's what Volley's missus goes through everytime he gets pissed up and wants sex.

Obviously when rekindling one's youth, one should stay well away from Box Hill.

The sporting world’s most dangerous job: jockey

One of the most terrifying scenarios of any sport must be the realization by a jockey that the half-ton animal underneath him is not going to land successfully as it flies over a six foot fence. In that moment, entire careers can be uprooted and lives ended. Last March, JT McNamara experienced that sensation when he was flung from his horse. Regarded as one of the most effective amateur jockeys in the history of British racing, McNamara was paralyzed from the neck down at the age of 37, a month away from retirement.

“[McNamara] will never leave your mind,” Fidelma Toole, a fellow jockey and friend of McNamara’s told CNN. “I just pray to God that that didn’t happen to me. It was the simplest of falls and you can’t believe the damage. He can move his head around and talk just fine, but he can’t do anything else.”

A study from the Medical Journal of Australia found that being a jockey is more dangerous than being a boxer. And the only job that is more dangerous is being an offshore fisherman. The study covered four years of more than 75,000 races run in Australia from Aug. 2002 to July 2006. The statistics counted 3,360 race falls, which resulted in 861 serious injuries and five jockey deaths.

In a game which runs on chance and probability, the odds are stacked against jockeys. Since 1940, approximately two jockeys die every year as the result of on-track incidents.

Being a jockey: the most dangerous job on land

A MEDICAL Journal of Australia study has found that being a jockey is more dangerous than being a boxer, with only the job of an offshore fisherman having more risk to lives.

In the wake of the horror fall of Magic Millions Classic-winning jockey Jason Holder at Eagle Farm last Wednesday, the report reveals that skydivers, motorbike racers, loggers and pilots face less risk of being killed than the lightly framed riders of thoroughbreds.

"you're most likely to die aged between 40-55. Amazing to think you're more likely to die in middle-age in a motorbike accident than a teenager".

This is quite a well known phenomena. Apparently it is usually the same chain of events. Bloke will have had a relatively low power machine as a youth which he will have got rid of when family, babies and need to get a car that holds a push chair etc comes along.

Then as the kids have grown, he decides to rekindle his youth by buying a bike again, and because he now has a bit more money, gets a 1000cc+ rocket ship that he is not used to and not capable of controlling, and wraps it and himself round a tree somewhere near Box Hill on Sunday morning.

Re: What's the most dangerous job in the world?
,

My old man once told me a story about watching an artic U-turn on the A127 when it was the Southend old Rd years ago and seeing a motorbike rider hit the trailer and get decapitated.

I think the story sunk in because I got a motorbike as soon as I could to go with the other 1000 or so things I did as a teenager to piss my parents off. I remember him and my mum fucked off somewhere for the day and I got the girl who lived over the road to dye my hair blonde. I had jet black hair and it went a funny shade of ginger instead. All I remember next is running round the garden with my old man shouting 'COME HERE YOU LITTLE CUNT' with a brick in his hand. Fair enough really in retrospect. Who wants a ginger child?

I was a motorbike courier for 8 years, a controller for 2 years and rode for Virgin Limobike as a motorcycle chauffeur for 5 years. I did a bit of racing over that time (as did most of my pals) and in all that time I've never known a motorcyclist who I've known killed.

A pal of mine is a great racer and was on joint points with another rider (who I didn't know) at the last Thundersport round at Brands. First right down Paddock Hill they were vying for the lead and that's the last thing he remembered before waking up in hospital charged with Manslaughter. The other bloke had died in the accident and his family wanted my pal charged with murder.

I didn't know this but if someone dies in a racing incident you are automatically charged with Manslaughter. It looked a bit hairy for a while but it turned out ITV4 were at the meeting and recorded the whole accident and my pal was blameless.

It's actually more dangerous if you ride a motorcycle recreationally as you tend to ride faster and you're most likely to die aged between 40-55. Amazing to think you're more likely to die in middle-age in a motorbike accident than a teenager.
